Description

Big Blue Lime/ Scale Reducing Water Filter Cartridge 4.5″ x 10″ Slow Phos

The cartridges contain food-grade, slow-melting polyphosphate that gradually dissolves in water to help prevent scale formation and rust build-up. This treatment is commonly recommended for use in ice machines, coffee and vending machines, food service equipment, water heaters, air conditioning systems, and various other types of water processing equipment. All materials used are FDA-grade. The cartridges remain effective in controlling scale, corrosion, and iron-related issues for up to six months, depending on flow rates and feed water conditions.

Applications:

SCALE – Hardness particles are kept separated, preventing them from precipitating and forming deposits when heated. Maximum hardness: 8 GPG.
CORROSION – A protective layer forms on metal surfaces, helping guard against the effects of acidity/alkalinity, hardness, chloride, and other factors that affect the corrosion of water equipment and pipes. pH range: 6.5–9.0.
IRON – Dissolved iron, up to 1 ppm, remains suspended in solution (sequestered), preventing it from precipitating and causing staining or discoloration.

SLOW PHOS – Polyphosphate Bead Media

  • Polyphosphate filled to prevent scale accumulation
  • Protects plumbing system metals from acid water corrosion
  • Replace every 4 – 6 months
  • Extends the service life of water-using appliances by minimizing the effects of hard and acidic water

The filter cartridge is filled with polyphosphate spheres that deliver essential protection to both tankless and traditional hot water systems. This material reacts with naturally occurring calcium bicarbonates in the water supply, forming a thin, tight, non-corrosive, passivating film along the inner walls of pipes. This protective layer acts similarly to a glass-like coating, effectively separating the water from the metal surfaces of the plumbing and hot water system.

If you live in any region with hard water—which applies to most areas—there is a strong likelihood of scale formation in equipment that heats or boils water. This occurs because the same dissolved minerals responsible for hard water also contribute to scale buildup. In addition, these minerals can cause water spots on glassware, white residue on faucets and showerheads, and, in some cases, stubborn stains on porcelain bathroom fixtures.

Whether you are a restaurant owner maintaining a professional appearance or a homeowner aiming to extend the lifespan of household appliances such as a coffee maker, addressing hard water is important. Installing one or more scale reduction filters is often a practical solution. In many cases, a scale reduction filter can be combined with a chlorine reduction filter within a single system. However, careful attention should be given to the replacement schedule. Scale reduction filters are typically rated in grains of hardness, and their effectiveness may decline before any noticeable change in chlorine taste occurs. Therefore, it is important to replace the filter according to the manufacturer’s recommended schedule rather than relying on taste as an indicator, ensuring consistent protection against scale buildup.
