For whole-home protection, this system targets fluoride at every point of entry rather than a single faucet. It utilizes 1.0 cubic feet of high-grade bone char, a material recognized for its superior ability to sequester various fluoride compounds.

This media effectively reduces fluoride levels by approximately 1.0 mg/l while simultaneously capturing heavy metals, pesticides, and chlorine. For optimal performance, an optional 10″ Big Blue sediment pre-filter is available to shield the main media from particulates. This centralized approach ensures clean, treated water throughout the entire residence.

Bone char (bone charcoal) is an effective medium for reducing fluoride in water. It consists of a carbon structure supported by a porous hydroxyapatite matrix, a crystalline calcium phosphate material with surface ions that can be exchanged with fluoride ions.

Fluoride removal occurs mainly through adsorption and ion exchange. In addition, the filter functions similarly to standard carbon systems. When used in a whole-house setup, it treats all incoming water, limiting exposure through drinking, inhalation, and skin contact during daily use.

A larger carbon filter improves performance due to increased media volume and deeper filtration bed, while maintaining stable water pressure compared to solid block entry-point filters.

Carbon is highly effective at reducing contaminants such as VOCs, pesticides, herbicides, chlorine, benzene, trihalomethanes (THMs), radon, and various solvents. Its high adsorption capacity comes from its extensive surface area, approximately 125 acres per pound. Activated carbon carries a slight electro-positive charge, increasing its attraction to impurities.

How long does it last?

System longevity depends on water volume and local contaminant levels. Point-of-use units typically manage 5,000 gallons, while whole-house configurations support approximately 100,000 gallons. For a standard four-person household, this usually necessitates a single annual media replacement. Keeping bulk bone char in stock allows for flexible, on-demand maintenance.
