Conditions for Operation:

  • Maximum water temperature: 100°F (38°C)
  • Water pH range: 6.8–9.0
  • Bed depth: 30–36 in.
  • Freeboard: Minimum 50% of bed depth
  • Backwash rate: 10–12 gpm/sq. ft.
  • Backwash bed expansion: Minimum 20–40% of bed depth
  • Alkalinity should be greater than two times the combined sulfate and chloride concentration.

Birm® is an efficient and economical filtration media used to remove dissolved iron and manganese from raw water. It works in both gravity-fed and pressurized systems by acting as an insoluble catalyst, supporting the reaction between dissolved oxygen and iron compounds. In groundwater, iron is typically present in a soluble form that cannot be filtered directly.

Birm® accelerates the oxidation of ferrous iron (Fe++) into ferric iron (Fe+++), forming ferric hydroxide, which precipitates and can be easily filtered. The media is durable, has a long service life, and can be cleaned through simple backwashing. It is not consumed during operation, making it a cost-effective option.

For proper performance, the water should be free of oil and hydrogen sulfide, contain less than 4–5 ppm of organic matter, and maintain a pH of at least 6.8. Dissolved oxygen levels should be at least 15% of the iron content. If pH is low, materials like calcite or soda ash can be used to correct it. Low oxygen levels may require aeration.

Chlorine and polyphosphates can reduce the effectiveness of Birm® by damaging or coating the media. Any chemical used should be tested for compatibility.

Birm® can also remove manganese effectively. For best results, the pH should be between 8.0 and 9.0. If iron is also present, the pH should remain below 8.5 to prevent filtration issues.
