Description
Birm Media filter
Birm media filter is an efficient and economical method of removing iron and manganese compounds from raw water supplies. Acting as an insoluble catalyst, it accelerates the reaction between dissolved oxygen and soluble ferrous iron. This process converts non-filterable ferrous bicarbonate into ferric hydroxide, a solid precipitate captured by the media.
Because Birm functions as a catalyst rather than a consumable, it remains intact during operation, leading to significant cost savings compared to chemical alternatives. Its durable physical structure resists attrition and functions across various temperatures, requiring only periodic backwashing to clear the trapped sediment.
For optimal performance, the influent water must meet the following criteria:
- Water must remain free of oil, hydrogen sulfide, and excessive organic matter (under 5 ppm).
- The dissolved oxygen content must be at least 15% of the iron concentration, with a pH of 6.8 or higher.
- If the pH is low, utilize neutralizing agents like Corosex or Calcite. For low oxygen levels, implement aeration before filtration.
