KDF-55 consists of finely granulated copper and zinc alloys that initiate a redox (oxidation-reduction) reaction as water passes through. This process transfers electrons between molecules, converting harmful contaminants into less harmful forms. For example, chlorine is transformed into chloride, a stable and safer compound.

KDF 55 is specifically designed to reduce chlorine, heavy metals, and microorganisms. When used as the first stage of filtration, it helps extend the lifespan of the entire system by limiting scale buildup and bacterial growth on downstream media, particularly carbon filters. This also allows later stages to focus on more persistent contaminants.

Granular Activated Carbon (1.5 CU FT)

Activated carbon is highly effective at adsorbing impurities due to its extremely large surface area. It carries a slight positive charge, attracting negatively charged contaminants as water flows through it.

Its performance depends on carbon quantity and contact time—more carbon and slower flow rates result in better filtration. Coconut shell carbon is commonly preferred for its higher efficiency.

Activated carbon removes contaminants through adsorption and catalytic reduction. It is effective against chlorine, chloramines, organic compounds, VOCs, pesticides, benzene, and other chemicals. It is widely used for improving taste and odor, as well as in pre-treatment stages for reverse osmosis systems.
